US General 5-Drawer Mechanics Cart Plasma Table

Hey all, thought might find interest in my Tool Cart conversion. I essentially ripped the lid off the toolbox and installed a tub with slats in the top part of the cart. I originally intended to weld the top part of the toolbox to be water tight, but quickly found out that my welding skills (first welding project) were not up to the task. I opted to get the tub bent up by send cut send, as well as a custom shelf for the plasma cutter and a bracket for mounting a monitor arm. I welded the seams of the tub and added a 1/2 NPT bung and valve for the drain. The Tub is sloped 2 degrees in both directions to make it easier to drain. I welded a frame out of 1-1/4 tubing and cut slits for the table slats. Then I welded the tub to the frame. The slats land ontop of two open areas of the tub so they can lay flat. The tub just lays on the rim of the toolbox and I have some angle brackets attaching the frame to the t-slots on the X2. I used the brackets that came with the X2 to mount the Arcdroid to the frame of the toolbox. If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t of even attempted to weld the on the Toolbox steel, I would of just removed the rivits for the lid and drilled a hole for the drain and left everything else stock. Cost breakdown

  • slats ($40)
  • Tubing ($60)
  • Send cut send parts (~$250 includes the Tub, shelf, and monitor arm adapter)
  • Upgraded casters ($45)

If anyone is interested in the designs let me know and Ill post them up on github.

Nice touch. I did a similar welding table setup out of the 5 drawer green cabinet. I could see if I was going to go with the arcdroid I would definitely go this route as well I think. I’m still on the fence of getting one or going with a 4 x 4 foot print plasma table. The HF cart would definitely be more 2 car garage friendly for sure!!!

I have the same cart I would love if you shared the files
